The Michigan Vehicle Bill of Sale, also known as “Form TR-207“, is a legal document that proves the legal sale and purchase of a motor vehicle in the state of Michigan. All required information will be present on this form and will also prove the change of ownership. This document will require a notarization.

Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form BVDR-108) – Allows the new owner of the vehicle to have certification that the mileage on the vehicle is accurate. Also is required when registering at a Local Secretary of State’s Office.

Register a Vehicle in Michigan

In order to legally operate a motor vehicle on Michigan roadways, it must be registered and insured to drive in the state. Either way, you must register your vehicle your vehicle within 15 days of purchase or acquisition of a vehicle. If you are purchasing from a dealership, they will do your titling and registration for you. If you purchase from an individual, the responsibility will be your own to ensure the titling and vehicle registration are completed. Both of these will happen at the same time and in the same place. The Secretary of State would like to recommend that the buyer and seller visit an SOS office together for this process.

Needed to Register – You will require the following documents:

The signed-over title. All new owners must appear in person

  • The buyer’s and seller’s signatures.
  • The signature of the lienholder, if applicable.
  • The vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Odometer reading
  • Proof of MI no-fault auto insurance
  • Proof of identification (photo ID)
  • Be prepared to pay all registration fees at registration

How to Write

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer Information – The parties must enter the following:

  • The Seller –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Name
  • Driver’s License Number
  • Physical Address
  • City
  • State

Step 2 – Vehicle Details – Enter the information required as follows:

  • Make
  • Type/Model
  • Year
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Color
  • Odometer Reading (in miles)

Trade/Purchase Price – Select the boxes that apply. Offer additional information if required:

  • If checking the first box, the seller will accept only monetary payment – Enter the dollar amount in words
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Provide a specific date when the parties have agreed that payment will be made mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Enter the date in which the document will be known as in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • If the parties have agreed that payment will be made at a later date, enter that date mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Other – If different negotiations have been agreed upon by the parties, enter a brief description of the negotiations (if extra room is needed add a sheet and attach it to the form
  • Check the box if no money will be exchanged if the item(s) are being provided as a gift to the “buyer”
  • The last box in this section will address a direct trade. Enter a brief description of the conditions of the trade

Step 3 – Seller’s Disclosure – The seller must read the statements in this section and provide information regarding any known defects in the vehicle being sold

Step 4 – Seller’s Signature – Provide the Seller’s signature in the line provided

Step 5 – Signatures – If all signatories are present before a notary public, all parties must provide the following:

  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Witness – 
  • Signature
  • Printed Name

Step 6 – Notarization – After the notary has witnessed all signatures, they will then complete the remainder of the form and affix their state seal.

  • Make copies of the completed document to provide to all who signed, for record keeping
  • Give the original copy to the buyer
