Description

The Kentucky Vehicle Bill of Sale is a legal document that will provide proof of legal sale and purchase. It also will provide appropriate information needed for registration. As well, it will prove change of ownership. This document must be notarized and so it’s recommended that no signatures be submitted until all signing parties are before a notary public.

Odometer Disclosure Statement (Form TC 96-5) – Required to complete the transfer of ownership in addition to the bill of sale.

Register a Vehicle in Kentucky

If you’ve purchased a new vehicle from a dealership, your dealer will do all of the title and registration work for you. If you have purchased from a private party, or you’re a new resident of the state, you must register the vehicle within 15 days. Regardless, you may not operate the vehicle on any of the Kentucky roads or highways, prior to proper registration and licensing.

Where to Register –  You may gather all of your required documentation and register your vehicle at your local County Clerk’s Office

Needed to Register – Gather the following documents and information:

  • The state of Kentucky stopped the emissions testing in 2005 for vehicles in the state. However, if you do not have a Kentucky title, you will need to go to any local Sheriff’s Office, in your county, to acquire a vehicle inspection. Once completed, you will receive a certificate of inspection, required to register and title your vehicle
  • You’ll need a completed  Application for Kentucky Certificate of Title/Registration(Form TC 96-182)
  • Note* – Titles issued February 2000 and after will have the transaction and change of ownership transaction form on the back side of the title that May be completed, in place of the application for title and registration.
  • A bill of sale
  • Proof of Insurance purchased in Kentucky
  • Your social security number
  • Be prepared to pay all of the taxes and fees associated with this transaction

Step 1 – Seller and Buyer Information – Enter the required information:

Step 2 – Vehicle Details – Enter the vehicle information required:

  • Make
  • Type/Model
  • Years
  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • Color of the vehicle
  • Odometer Reading (in miles)
  • Will the Title be included in the sale? Check Yes or No)

Step 3 –  Trade/Purchase Price – Check any of the boxes that apply. Provide additional information (if any):

  • If the first box is checked, the seller will accept only monetary payment – Enter the dollar amount in words
  • Enter the dollar amount in numbers
  • Enter the date agreed by the parties that payment will be made in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Type or Write the date in which the document will be known as in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • If the parties have agreed that payment will be made at a later date than previously stated, enter the final date in which payment will be accepted by the seller in mm/dd/yyyy format
  • Other – If different agreements have been made, enter a description of the final agreement (if added room is required, add a sheet that you may attach to the form
  • Check the box if item(s) are being provided as a gift to the “buyer”
  • If this will be a trade, check the box and enter a brief description regarding the terms of the trade

Step 4 –  Seller’s Disclosure – The seller must read the statements in this section and provide information regarding any known defects with the vehicle being sold and purchased.

Step 5 –  Signatures – If all signatories are present before a notary public all parties must provide:

  • The Seller –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Buyer –
  • Signature
  • Printed Name
  • AND
  • The Witness – 
  • Signature
  • Printed Name

Step 6 – Notarization – Once the notary is present to witness all signatures, he or she will then complete the remainder of the form, also affixing their state seal.

  • Make copies of the completed document so that you may provide to all who signed, a copy for their records
  • Give the original copy to the buyer
