Description

The Colorado Vehicle Bill of Sale is a legal document provided by a seller as proof that payment has been provided and ownership has been transferred. This document is written as an “as is” document, meaning there is no warranty by the previous owner of the vehicle. It will provide all of the vehicle information and what is needed for the buyer to provide to the DMV for titling and proof of ownership.

Registering a Vehicle in Colorado

If you are new to the State of Colorado, or if you are a resident and have recently purchased a new or used car, you must register your vehicle with the State of Colorado within 30 days of purchase. If your vehicle is already registered in Colorado and you need to renew your registration you may appear at your county title and registration office or you do have the option of renewal by mail or online.

  • Division of Motor Vehicle Locations

If you’re registering a vehicle in Colorado for the first time, visit your local DMV office with your title, your identification ie: Driver’s License or State ID, a VIN Verification Form if required (see C.R.S. 24-32-3323, 38-29-122, 42-3-105(l)(c), 42-6-107(l)(b). You will need an emissions inspection form (if applicable in the county in which you reside). There are Emissions Inspection Stations located around the state, locate one near you if needed.  You will also need a bill of sale to be prepared to provide proof of auto insurance and to make payment for your registration fee.

If you purchase your vehicle from a dealership, the dealership, will generally prepare and submit all of your registration documentation (which may include an Application For Title and/or Registration) for you and provide a temporary tag for you to legally drive the vehicle on public roads and highways until your registration is complete.

Otherwise, once you’ve gathered all of your documents and appeared at the DMV to register your vehicle, once the registration process is complete, you will receive either a temporary tag or license plates.
