SUVs and pick-ups might be the dominant segments in the US but cars are still the best sellers in the world’s largest market. Volkswagen, which outsold second placed Nissan in China by two to one last year, delivered close to a million examples of its best sellers, the Lavida and Bora in 2019. In Europe, the new Golf and to a lesser extent the ID.3 mean 2020 will be a banner year for new cars from the VW brand.

General Motors’ abandonment of India took another step when China’s Great Wall Motors (GWM) confirmed it had agreed to buy The General’s remaining car plant in Talegaon in the state of Maharashtra. As GM retreats (also from South Africa), the acquisition, which is expected to be completed in the second half of 2020, will speed up the Chinese automaker’s entry into one of the world’s most promising automotive markets.

India Auto Expo world debuts – Kia QYi concept

Along with a special version of the Carnival which will soon be the brand’s second model for the local market, Kia is to show a preview of a small SUV at the New Delhi Auto Expo in February.

Ralf Speth resigns as JLR CEO

Ralf Speth will retire as executive director and CEO of Tata Motors’ Jaguar Land Rover at the end of his contract term in September 2020, the automaker announced on Thursday (30 January). He’ll become non executive vice chairman.

Mercedes starts new blockchain pilot on CO2

Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance details new ‘framework’

The Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance has outlined a new ‘framework’ it said would “further reinforce its business model and strengthen its management structure”. All three companies reiterated that the Alliance was essential for strategic growth and enhanced competitiveness for each company. An initial move will see Renault assemble a variant of its Trafic van for Mitsubishi to sell in Oceania (essentially Australia and New Zealand).

Rivian to work with Lincoln on its first EV

Ford brand Lincoln and EV start-up Rivian will work together to develop a new fully electric vehicle, based on Rivian’s skateboard platform. Ford had previously said that it has invested US$500m in Rivian and that the two companies would develop an EV.
