I’ve never used Fram filters before since I only use Motorcraft on my Ford. But our other cars oil filter is at an odd angle making it difficult to maneuver an oil wrench in. The textured grip on the Fram is an absolute life and temper saver when changing the oil on this vehicle. The price is on the money and the function works as well as any other filter and maybe better if I really examined things closer. My one complaint isn’t product related but Amazon shipping practices. I personally wouldn’t ship an oil filter in a bubble mailer and instead would opt for a box. It would be a shame to find out there was damage in transit when there is a part malfunction while after install. This feedback had been noted to Amazon multiple times now without correction.

This is a great filter for the price. With synthetic media and cheaper than most other synthetic filters this filter is hard to beat. I usually get OEM Honda but it’s always a crapshoot what I’ll get, either the rebadged Fram TG A02 or the Filtech A01. Both cost near $8 at the dealer. For a little more I can get this which is synthetic. The Fram is rated for 20 microns with 99% efficiency and will run as long as 15k. Since I usually run my oil 10-12k this filter is perfect for that. Used oil analysis shows the oil is clean and performing well for the mileage so I have no doubts this filter is doing a great job.Pictures show filter cut open after almost 12k miles.

For many years, I only used OEM Nissan Filters, because I was told that nothing else compares. This became a tedious and expensive task to go to the dealership to buy a filter or a 6 pack.I did a lot of online research to find out what oil filters tested best/worst, and I didn’t just trust a single source. In the end, The Ultra Syn seemed to come out at or near the top of almost every review that tested it. Quality vs. Price, this seemed to be the best value for someone who actually cares about what parts go into their car.Currently 5 cars in my driveway, multiple subscriptions to ‘Subscribe and Save’ make it a lot easier for me to manage my oil changes without having to make a special trip.

The Fram Ultra Synthetic is a superb filter. I sent in an oil sample from my 2006 GMC Duramax after 7200 miles and about 20 months, tow duty. The particulates in the oil sample were <0.1 percent and at the limit of the measuring equipment. Comment from Blackstone apart from being astonished at the condition of the motor as indicated by the oil was that the filter was doing an outstanding job. Hat tip to Fram, you get what you pay for, buy Fram top of the line and skip the $5 junk sold by this and other manufacturers. This filter has synthetic media, silicone anti drain back and easy grip cap. Sold all day long for $8 at WalMart.

Actually works really well as a transmission filter on my 1999 Subie Impreza Outback Sport with the 4 speed auto tranny (4EAT). The factory filter is a special design, and I would not recommend using ANY other oil filter in this instance. However, the Fram Ultra synthetic media flows SO WELL (with so little flow resistance), that you can get away with it. This filter is the exact same gasket and outer diameter as the factory Tokyo Roki Subaru trans filter, but the Fram is longer by about an inch. The Subie filter has a small hole in the metal end cap that restricts the flow of transmission fluid based on the diameter of the hole, but it allows most of the fluid to travel through the filter unrestricted and also unfiltered. The smaller hole creates pressure that forces a small percentage of the trans fluid through the actual factory paper media to be filtered. If I had to guess, it’s MAYBE filtering 5-10% of the fluid that goes through the filter…and even less when hot, because the fluid is thinner and less is diverted through the media as opposed to the hole in the endcap.I’ve been using this Fram Ultra on the transmission for over 1k miles now without issue and I know I’m getting fantastic filtration of the fluid in a way that is otherwise impossible. I’m able to get the gunk really OUT over the course of several drain-and-fills over the next 5k-10k miles. D&F the new fluid in adds detergency and allows the fluid to dissolve varnish and other build-up. But this has to be filtered out or it just recirculates endlessly. This filter allows me to get that junk out without resorting to a full flush. It flows enough so that the tranny works and shifts perfectly even when cold (well cold for Florida; a 45 degree morning).I do NOT consider this a long term solution. Not hardly. But it’s a great way to clean as I drive without having to drop the pan and/or do a complete flush. The gentle detergency of the new fluid (4 quarts, in my case) added for each drain-and-fill works to carry the contaminants to this filter, which I’ll remove in 5k to 10k miles and replace with a new factory filter. It’s a specialized application, but one worth noting. Also, it’s proof that Fram Ultras have some of the best flow rates on the market, in addition to some of the best filtration (beta ratios of around 99.9% at 20 microns). You literally get the best of both worlds. Also, if you’re not using a Fram Ultra for your vehicle’s engine oil, you’re leaving some protection on the table. Why do that when these can be had at Wally world for under $10 and can be used for up to 15k oil change intervals and/or 3 consecutive 5k oil change intervals (which is what I do).

This is a Fram Ultra XG7317 with 24,362 miles using 3- OCI’s of early 2015 vintage PYB 5w-20 conventional motor oil. From a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport AWD 2L CVT with no makeup oil through the process. Most driving is highway-rural.I ran this one out as my old 10K OCI’s were showing I was throwing out perfectly good filters. This is overkill but shows you even with conventional oil these are the best filters on the market.

From what I can tell as a shade tree mechanic who has changed oil in a variety of vehicles for 50+ years, the Fram Ultra Synthetic is a top-of-the-line oil filter that compares favorably to other top brands. Appears to be very well made and has a quality silicon anti-drain back valve and filtering media designed for long-life synthetic oils. The SureGrip is a nice feature that may assist with removal, especially if access is tight. As to its claimed life of 15,000 miles, I’ll never push things that far because good engine protection demands more frequent oil changes – even with synthetic oil and a quality filter changes in the 6,000 to 7,000 mile range are good insurance.

  8. I.T. Guy

Good quality filter with extended life (meaning that there is a less chance that the filter element will collapse on you and ruin your engine while you are trying to save money on oil changes). As online videos with filter cutaways prove, this is a good, solid filter, somewhat ahead of the crowd. It is not the super best, but it is made well enough to be realistically good. The synthetic just means it will remain uncollapsed longer. The filter cartridge inside is very well made and very sturdy.

  9. Brian

I installed this product on my 2019 Honda Civic EX, which takes 0W-20 full synthetic, and is a perfect fit. After screwing the filter on, I tested whether it was easily removable and was easy with the grip feature built in. I will see how the filter performs after one year, but it seems that most, if not everyone, reviews seem rather positive. Hopefully the next time I need to remove the filter, it will be easier than the OEM installed filter. The latter is torqued on so much and has no grip to unscrew the filter. Plus, there is very limited room on the 10th generation Civic to even use tools to remove the filter.

Not sure why folks keep bashing FRAM. Best value oil filter ever purchase at 50 dollar quality. Rating of 20,000 miles mean I only have to swap the oil twice a year. Been using this for the last three years with no issues and no mentioned by poor reviewers who don’t have a clue what they are talking about. I can buy two of these filters as compared to the price of a bosch or K&N.I typically swapped mine at 10000 miles and I never observed fraying as some suggest of FRAM filters. Even the paper filters never frayed unless one is crazy enough to run them past 6,000 miles. The XG7317 is not paper based with a silicon seal for extended use along with synthetic. FRAM engineers and sales are very explicit on the box by listing the recommended mileage per level of offering.
